Exchange Students Jet Skiing
Thiago (Brazil) Host Mom Joanna and Bjorn (Germany) Enjoy Last Days of Indian Summer at Lake Naciemento

Jet Skiing on Lake Naciemento

When Bjorn Nastulla from Germany and Thiago Olivera from Brazil first found out that their new host family lived in Morgan Hill California, they had no idea what that would be like. Looking on a map, Morgan hill is about 20 miles south of San Jose..

They didn't know their host parents were avid outdoors people that loved to Jet Ski, Water Ski, and travel all over. They soon found out, and now are having a really great experience as their host parents take them all over California to many wonderful areas, including Lake Naciemento and Yosemite where they have a second home, golfing in the summer and skiing in the winter.

Their Host Dad is a Pilot and their Host Mom works with the Morgan Hill School District. They love to travel and Thiago and Bjorn are never certain what the next weekend will bring. Bike riding, motorcycling, jet skiing, golf and tennis are just a few of the activities that these Exchange students are doing any given weekend.

What Is Thanksgiving

“Thanksgiving is a truly American holiday. Its traditions began in the New World with a feast shared by the Pilgrims and Native Americans….The Pilgrims decided to have a three-day celebration feast to give thanks for a good harvest. Thus began the first Thanksgiving.”

Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It is a legal holiday in all states, the District of Columbia, the Canal Zone, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

History of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving, with its roast turkey, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pies is a distinctively American holiday. The legacy of the Pilgrims is cherished by all Americans as a time for giving thanks for the harvests and for other blessings the year has brought. The idea of such a day was not new with the Pilgrims. It is claimed that the Chinese observed such rites thousands of years ago. Thanksgiving can also be traced back to the ancient Jewish Feast of Tabernacles, which lasted eight days.

By the middle of the 19th century in America, most of the States celebrated a Thanksgiving Day. Gradually, the feeling grew all over the land that we should have a uniform national Thanksgiving Day. Sarah Josepha Hale, the editor of the popular magazine, Godey's Lady's Book, was the chief sponsor of this idea for forty years. After the victory at Gettysburg, there was great rejoicing in the North. President Lincoln issued a proclamation and named the last Thursday in November as the date.
