Northern California Redwoods Expedition

Left Arrow Back to News
Students from the San Francisco Bay Area joined up with students from Northern California to visit the magnificent Redwood Groves in Humboldt County. Students gathered together at a Denny's Restaurant early on the morning of November 10th, all piled into a large van, and headed north on Highway 101. They stopped for a mid-morning breakfast in Ukiah, and then headed north to Eureka, where they wandered around the

downtown area, and had a get-to-know-you session at Starbucks. Then it was back to Ferndale, where they had dinner at Curly's Restaurant in the Victorian Inn, built in 1890. With a full stomach and a smile on their faces, they headed for the famous Victorian Bed & Breakfast, the Shaw House Inn, where they spent the night.

The next morning they were joined by students from the Northern California region, where they had one of the fabulous breakfasts at the Shaw House, prepared by the proprietor, Paula Bigley, who is also hosting a German Exchange Student, Thomas Lentzen. Then eleven students piled into the van, and off to the Giant Redwoods. A day of wandering amongst trees that many are close to 1,000 years old, and are the largest and oldest living things on our planet.

Mid-afternoon, a lunch of wonderful Mexican food at a local restaurant of giant burritos, tamales, enchiladas and quesadilla's and then run down to the Eel River to see if we could find any salmon spawning.

Hundreds of pictures were taken, and finally tired, a little cold, back into the van, and head for Eureka and dinner at Marie Callendar's. Later, back to the Shaw House and sit in front of the fire, some of the kids playing Pictionary, some staying up way to late and talking, getting to know each other better, and then off to bed, another fabulous breakfast by Paula, and into the van - heading for  home. A great trip, with everyone having fun and enjoy
